History
La Malinche
La Malinche is one of the most important women in the History of Mexico and probably the most controversial. She was a translator and negotiator to the famous Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes. If you know the true story of Malinali or La Malinche, you’ll know that she was formerly a princess, however was sold into slavery by her own mother.
Malinali came from royalty but a twist of fate turned her into a slave for the Mayans.
Interestingly enough, her time spent with the Mayans allowed her to acquire a third language. The acquisition of these languages would later prove to be Malinalis vantage point for her uprise to power. She was able to land in the hands of Hernan Cortes as his personal interpreter and negotiator.
They say some people get “lost in translation” but Malinali proved to the world and to herself that she was “found in translation” and used her multilingual capabilities to her ultimate advantage. Knowledge is power, wouldn’t you agree?
